Rabbit Hay
Hay all day, keeps the vet away!
Rabbits love hay!
Hay is the most important part of a rabbit’s diet. It provides essential fibre that keeps their digestive system moving and helps wear down their continuously growing teeth.
Hay provides mental enrichment. Rabbits are natural foragers, so by providing hay it will encourage natural grazing behaviour, burrowing, nesting and play.
Different hay textures (coarse, soft, leafy, stalky) stimulate curiosity and activity.
Frequently asked questions
Rabbits should have unlimited access to fresh hay 24/7. It should make up 80–90% of their total diet. Fresh water should also be available, at all times.
Recommended types of hay:
Timothy hay (most popular and nutritionally balanced)
Orchard grass (soft and fragrant)
Meadow hay (varied and enriching)
Oat hay (crunchy and stimulating)
Hay should be replaced daily! Rabbits prefer fresh hay and may avoid older, trampled, or soiled hay. Keep it topped up at all times.
To encourage your bunny to eat more hay, you could try the following:
Offer different types (timothy, orchard grass, meadow, oat hay).
- Mix in a little dried herbs or treats.
- Use hay racks or toys to increase interest.
